How to increase speaker volume on laptop windows 7

I am trying to increase the speaker volume on windows vista 7 .....I've followed the instructions to click sound icon, playback devices,then properties. However, when I try to click loudness equalization the it doesn't stay checked and goes back to normal. What can I do please help . I've damaged the speaker port on my laptop and don't have the money to repair it at the moment.
