Hello,

I recently bought 4 * 4GB (Total 16GB) of RAM to my computer. My motherboard is a GIGABYTE G1.Assassin (X58). Since it have 6 DIMM/RAM slots, I am a bit confused.

How should I configure and place my RAM? Side by side? Does it matter in what order/slot I install the RAM in?

Hope anyone can help me out. Don't want to screw this up. It will run in Dual Channel now, right?

This is how my motherboard look like in the case http://i.imgur.com/VzD4j.jpg

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
The noob

You bought the wrong kit. You bought a quad channel kit (or 2 dual channel kits) and you were supposed to buy a triple channel kit.

For best performance you want to only use 3 sticks, or return it for the proper triple channel kit.

The proper configuration is in your motherboard manual.

Actually.. It was an RMA case. The guy at Patriot Memory said that it will be the same performance etc etc.

This is the kit I got:
http://www.patriotmemory.com/product/detail.jsp?prodline=5&catid=34&prodgroupid=232&id=1256&type=1

Is it a huge difference between quad vs triple in performance?

This is how I have installed them:

Does this seem to be correct? I.e a dual channel config for FOUR modules. The 4 first slots is used.

Haven't powered on the computer yet. Don't want to risk any hardware blowing up..

Thanks for replying. Appreciate it.

**I know it's in the wrong Sub cat**

Not to worry, RAM will work in Triple Channel mode. Page 16 (bottom section) of the manual states how you can install the four memory sticks to enable Triple Channel.

3 Channel--
1. 3 Channel mode cannot be enabled if only one or two DDR3 memory modules are installed.
2. When enabling 3 Channel mode with three, four or six modules, it is recommended that memory of the
same capacity, brand, speed, and chips be used. When enabling 3 Channel mode with three memory
modules, be sure to install them in the DDR3_1, DDR3_3 and DDR3_5 sockets. When enabling 3 Channel
mode with four memory modules, be sure to install them in the DDR3_1, DDR3_2, DDR3_3 and DDR3_5 sockets.

From Back to Front (that's Slot 1 being the closest to the CPU socket), install as follows:

Slot: 1 Install

Slot: 2 Install

Slot: 3 Empty

Slot: 4 Install

Slot: 5 Empty

Slot: 6 Install

In other words, Install in all the THREE GREEN slots and ONE BLACK closest to the CPU Socket
