Please can you help an old lady.

I have an Asus laptop with a recently re-installed Windows 7. The laptop has one operative USB port so I bought the above Hub and it did not have a driver disk with it. When I plugged it in a message came up in the taskbar to say it was installing the device. I can also see it in the Devices and Printers in the Control Panel. My mouse driver works off it perfectly.

I recently bought an external DVD/CD writer and when I tried to connect it, it wouldn't work.

I checked the Hub without the DVD/CD unit in and the error message 'USB Hub not installed' came up. I cannot find where to get this or how to install it.

I would appreciate your help While I am computer literate to a fair degree, computer programme expert, I am not.

Thank you in anticipation.

Not a nuisance.

You are just dealing with the sort of problem that vexes us all.

Is the problem hardware, software, firmware...

First of all, let's set aside the Apple Mac results.

Does the hub have its own power supply? Probably not, especially if this is the product:

http://siyoteam.manufacturer.globalsources.com/si/6008850103642/pdtl/USB-hub/1136567884/multi-USB-2.0-HIGH-speed-4-Ports-Hub.htm

The two cables you described sort of suggests to me that one is the usual USB cable for an external device. The first cable being the USB end (flat rectangular, designated "A" and the other sort of squarish end is a "B" connector. The second cable appears to be a USB to a power connection cable. In otherwords a second USB connection...
Does the mouse work in all four of the hub ports? A bit tedious to check but I would do that first.

Do you have any external USB cables that are known to work? Try a different cable between the hub and external DVD/CD.

Do you have access to another computer to test the external DVD/CD?

Overall, the objective is to determine where the problem exists (hub, cable, external DVD/CD) by elimination.

I am getting more confused. I tried both items individually and together on my landlady's Apple Mac (she has Windows 7 on it as well) and it didn't recognise either of them.

On my laptop all four ports work. I am also presently charging my Scandisk mp3 player via the Hub without any problem.

Then earlier, I went on to the Printers and Devices on the Control Panel without having plugged in the Hub and there was the error message for the laptop. It is showing that the USB driver Controller is not installed, but when I tell it to search for updates, it says it can't find any. Microsoft Help says go to the manufacturer - which one do I try? The Asus website, the Siyoteam website (I can't find it), or the DVD/CD which is a cheap generic Chinese with instructions to start the computer in CMOS. How do I do that. The DVD/CD has two cables with usb connections the one end and one similar to the connection to a printer (sort of squarish), and the other, round end similar to the old cell phone chargers.

I apologise for being such a nuisance.

Something like this product:

(Pictures always help......)

I believe that the hub is probably poorly made and unable to manage the power demand of both the mouse and DVD/CD player. Plus the load to recharge the mp3 player. And if the laptop as only one operative port (meaning that there is another non-working port) then the operative port may not be up to par either.

Here is a link that addresses problems similar to what you are experiencing:

Very long I know, just take a look at the various suggestions and try those that you are comfortable trying.

With any luck one of them may be successful. Otherwise you may learn more about what is going on and thus narrow down the problem.

And we still need to consider possible problems with the driver for DVD/CD. Not unusual for such guides to be pretty much useless to be polite about it. Add in cheap components, untrained labor, non-existent quality control or factory testing and the products are shoddy at best. DVD/CD could be contributing.

Please do not get overwhelmed or intimidated. Do what you can and please post as you feel necessary.

And perhaps someone else will jump in with one of those "Eureka moments". Always welcome.

Thank you so much for your help, especially the link to online-tech tips. I tried the first option for both Hub and the DVD/CD drive, unchecked the power management box, and both are working perfectly.

I can now get down to some real studying!
