Hello world!

I have a question:
Is it possible to install an Athlon XP Mobile on a desktop mobo?
Does it have exactly the same dimensions as as the normal Athlon XP "Barton" CPUs?
Will the BIOS of a desktop mobo recognise it? I don't know if the mobile versions have a different CPU-ID string.
And could there be a problem with the voltage, as the Mobile versions are supposed to run on a lower voltage?

Many thanks for your input!
Carl

Splendid
The mobile xp chips do work very well on a lot of s462 boards. It is not nceasary for the bios to recognize it.
If you let us know what mobo you are thinking of, we may be able to offer some tips.
I will point out that the xp-m chips are some of the best OCers that Amd has ever put out.
If your board supports lower voltages, they are also great for home entertainment rigs.

XP Mobiles use the Barton core. Some older boards won't support Bartons (including the desktop versions), most boards made within the last 3 years will.

The other restriction is that your board has to support multiplier adjustment, because the mobile CPU doesn't have a locked core.

Once installed, the board won't know what speed CPU it's supposed to be because the multiplier is open. That's OK, just set the multiplier and bus speed you desire. One nice thing about a mobile Barton is that you can use the same chip at 133x15 (2.0GHz), 166x12 (2.0GHz), and 200x10 (2.0GHz), so you're not limitted by the bus speeds your board supports.
