I just got my 250GB SSD from Newegg, I am planning to use the SSD for games and other things while my HDD remains my primary storage device. I saw that you need to put your OS onto the SSD and I am confused on how to do so. I am currently using Windows 8, I still have a free copy of Windows 10 to install though.

1. How large is the SSD? 250GB
2. How much current used space is on the HDD?
3. Excluding games/music/video, how much space is on the current HDD?
4. Do you have another drive available? Internal or external.

1.The SSD is 250GB
2. My HDD has 922GB and I have 693GB filled currently
3. Not exactly sure how to check that
4. I have an external WD Passport with 931GB and 544GB filled.

My Steamapps folder is 103GB, how do I check how much space is used for video/music etc? I accidentally selected your previous post as the best solution ;-;

OK...

250GB SSD
Currently 700GB used space on your current drive
103GB used for Steam games
Unknown for video/music/etc...
To find video/music/etc size...look at your Libraries folders, and your default Download folder.

Means we have to find 500GB of 'junk' to be moved elsewhere in order to be considering a clone operation from the old drive to the new SSD>

Otherwise, you're looking at a clean install of the OS on the SSD. Personally, this is preferable. But more work.

Well that is what I was thinking of doing anyway, Is the easiest way to use the disc it came with and copy everything over and then delete whatever I don't want on the SSD? I still haven't installed my free copy of Windows 10 could I possibly install that on it as well as my main HDD? I still wanna use the HDD.

Pictures: 408MB
Music: 6.60MB

I have no hard copy of windows, I was planning on buying a hard copy of windows 10, could I install that into it?

Sure.
But....for your existing OS. Where did that come from?

It was already on the PC when I purchased it from HHGregg (Wanted to build my own but didn't have the money). I am ordering parts for actually making one and I thought that I could install the SSD since I have an extra bay for one a hard drive.

OK, then...if you are building a new PC, just wait until it is built, then install the Win 10 you buy on that SSD in the new PC.
Don't try to install it now on that HHGregg thing, and then move it to the new PC.

Well I wont have the new PC until late next year and I wanted something faster to run my games on then my slow HDD

OK...late 2016.Let's not worry about that one jsut yet.

You can probably do a clean install of Win 10 on your new SSD.
IF we can extract the license key for your existing Win 8.1

Install and run Belarc Advisor. It will retrieve your existing Win 8.1 license key
Once you have that...

MediaCreation Tool
Create a USB or DVD install with that

Have ONLY the SSD connected.
Boot from the install media you created
Install
When it asks for the license key, enter your existing Win 8.1. With the latest Win 10 release, this is (supposedly) functional.

So I can have windows 10 installed on my main HDD and then install Windows 8 on my SSD and it will completely fine? Like I will get the new features of Windows 10 such as the re-deigned task-bar etc?

Not from that same 8.1 license, no. One or the other.
You can keep using 8.1, or you can Upgrade that license to Win 10.

Buy windows 10. Install it to your SSD by choosing the drive during install.

Backup your media/saved games etc. Plus anything important on your HDD and format.

You will be surprised how much junk there is and how many programs you don't need.

This is the most reliable way to give your PC a speed boost..

I have a 120gb sad and 2 1tb HODs in my system. I use the SSD as the C: drive. 1tb HDD as media drive and the other 1tb drive as backup.

It is easy to set up the media drive. Simply create the pics, music, photos etc folders on your media drive (D: on mine). Go to the shortcut for the original locations and change the shortcut target to the new ones.

When installing programs etc simply change the install location to your desired drive letter. Leave the rest of the path just change the letter. It will then create a programs folder in new location. Eg. D:/ program files/

Hope I haven't confused u more.
