How to install SSD

I have a HDD with windows and some basic programs on it, at 80GB. I have a 250GB SSD, and i want to migrate everything to the SSD, and keep the hard drive for storage purposes. Once the SSD is physically connected to the motherboard (SATA port, not the usb converter i see on tutorials), do i have to format the SSD, and if so, format it to what?

Also after i do this, to completely clear the hard drive do i also format that? and again, if so, format it to what?

It is a Samsung evo 850 250gb

I have it connected and i can see it in device manager, but not under devices and drives on 'this pc'

Go to Computer Manager -> Disk Manager -> then find your drive and create a partition on it.

Either that or do it via Command Prompt (run as admin):
Open command line->open Diskpart shell->list disk->select disk->do disk operation (ie partition)
