I have HCL laptop (NOTEBOOK K21 PDC). originally came with windows vista. It could play full hd videos and could run games like GTA san andreas, IGI etc. and could run counter strike 1.6 in open gl mode. Once i had to install XP sp2. Then it coudnt play hd videos and counter strike long with some other apps runs in software mode. Now currently i have installed windows 7 and facing the same issue. What can i do for this problem? Should i again install vista ? If yes then how can i install all the drivers that would run the hd videos and all. in the driver cd that came with the laptop, it includes many "Windows Installer" file in the video drivers folder; so should i install all the installable files? and for more info my current graphic card info is:
adapter- Standard VGA graphics adapter
Chipset- ATI radeon xpress 200M series.
RAM is 1GB and processor is intel Dual Core.

Solution
Reset the laptop to factory defaults using the recovery disks. Then read the instructions on how to install the drivers off the disk, or go to the vendor website and get the latest one which would be better. You need the chipset, audio, video, network drivers at least.

I'm pretty sure the ATI 200m chipset does not have Win 7 drivers, but there are ways you can get the Vista drivers installed on it. You need to download the Vista drivers, extract the files, then manually point the driver wizard to those files. You may need to just run the driver setup in Compatibility Mode and select Vista from the list. What you need to do exactly would depend on the system you have.

I'd really recommend just buying a modern PC since that thing has parts that are almost 10 years old now. I have to commend you for putting life into something that old. I've never been able to, haha. If you decide that's the best course of action, please let me know and give me a price range and some general features you'd like (weight/size, number of ports, etc) and I'll be glad to recommend you something.

But if you just want to keep that PC, you might have to reinstall Vista (I would not recommend reinstalling XP). Your laptop was released many years before Windows 7 came out, and as such, no drivers were created for Windows 7 on that. That means that drivers will (probably) not be compatible with it. However, if you want to test it out, try going here:

Download the VGA Device Type under Windows Vista 32 Bit and see if you might be able to install it. It's likely that you won't be able to install it unless you switch back to Vista though, but if you'd like to see if it works, try it. If not, switch back to Vista and then install it.

To be perfectly honest though, that PC needs to die. You'll be a lot happier in the long run with a new PC.

THank you for the reply. I totally agree that I shoul buy a new laptop. But I have to wait till coming december. I will try returning back to vist a till i get a new laptop.

My budget would be around 45k but no more than 50k. My basic requirement would be intel i5 4th gen processor, 4 gb ram, 2 gb nvidia graphics. So can you recommend some good laptops?

And another thing, I will download that drivers mentioned by you. But my question is while installing them, should i install each and every installable file and "windows installer package"?
Thank you.

If you're not buying until December, it'd be better if someone just recommended you a laptop closer to that time period. Though I could recommend you a laptop now, by December any number of deals could change and new models will be out. Also, I assume we're talking about Indian Rupees? For that price, I believe you'll be able to get a great laptop, but again, try asking closer to December.

Also, I'm not sure what you mean in your last question. Are there steps the installer gives you after hitting setup.exe? Unfortunately, I can't see those steps due to OS conflicts. I assume the installer should be pretty straight forward so yes, I believe you should just install all the optional files that the VGA driver setup gives you.

Yes of course i m talking abot Indian Rupees.
And my question was that when i open the folder of VGA drivers, i found some subfolders and again subfolders in which it had some installable files. so shold i install all those files or find some specific file to install. if that's the case which file should i search for. coz there is no such "setup.exe" file...
thank you again

thank you for the reply.
but can you provide me a link for the process you suggested coz i didnt get that properly? a link where i can understand that better....

You should have a Vista restore disk that came with the system. Boot the computer off that CD, once the restore is complete, install the drivers using the driver disk. Once that is done and you can get online, go here http://www.hclsupportservice.in/DriversDisplay.jsp?val=Tm90ZWJvb2s=&prodC=TGVhcHRvcA==&prodM=Series%2021 and download and install those latest drivers from the vendor.

thank you, I installed vista and also the drivers from the cd. But this is damn slow....lags too much...

what can i do about it?

It's an older system, even with a clean setup of Windows it won't run too well. If the video drivers are all up dated from the web site, you can get more RAM for the system. Get the fastest you can get for your model and 4 gig would be ideal. You can probably find used RAM for almost 1/2 the price of new since you will be getting a new laptop soon anyway.

okay, I updated the drivers, now it is working a bit fast. I will think about the RAM.

And one question, I was wondering that is there any way to increase the disk space in C without deleting anything, because i am somewhat short of disk space???

If you don't delete anything, the only way is to get a new hard-drive if you are short on space right after a restore.
For that system, if you are planning on a larger drive and more RAM, you can buy a faster used laptop for almost the same money. A newer dual-core system will run about $150-200 which is only about $100 more than a new drive and RAM would be.
