I've begun to think I'm in over my head here. I just bought a windows 10 oem disk to install on a new build. The envelope talks about pre-installation tools. Won't this disk just install on my new system?

If not how do I get 10 on this new build?

I'm not sure what it's talking about there.

The disk will allow you to install Windows, yes - but I'd actually recommend you create your own bootable USB here:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10

That W10 OEM disk may be pretty dated at this point, and you'll have to install all the updates once you've installed. If you create your own bootable media (and just use the OEM key), you'll be further ahead.

Solution
That page starts with, "you will first need to have a licence to install Windows 10"

I don't have a license. I haven't opened the outer envelope yet because if I cant use it I want to be able to return it. Will there be an installation key/product key inside?

there should be a little card inside the box with one of those silver scratch off areas. The key code will be there.

I agree with Barty. Download the installer from the link, anything on that disc is out of date. The installer is up to date, including the "creators" update that dropped this week.

Thanks for all the help.

I've made a bootable DVD (I dont have a thumb drive that big) from the page you linked to. I assume it doesn't need to be made on the computer it will be used on since that's impossible with a new build.

Is license and product key the same thing?
