Wow this is embarrassing. I started on a Commadore 64 and was pretty much a "goto" person for anyone who had a computer. Then like someone asleep at the station, the tech train just flew by me around the year 2000...

I am going to try to post a picture of the drive in question, but y'all probably already know what the interface on it is. I want to connect it to one of the cabled internal connections in my Dell Precision 3650. What do i need to order (probably from Amazon) to make them talk?

The reason is it came from an old destroyed family laptop and i'ld like to recover anything possibly memorable.

Many thanks to you folks that are on the train and know what you are doing!

Be very careful when plugging the IDE drive into the 44-pin PATA socket on an adapter. The +5V supply rails are fed into two pins, near one end of the drive interface.

If the adapter isn't "keyed" at pin 20 to prevent reverse correction, you could end up feeding +5V into pins 3 and 4 by mistake, then magic smoke will appear.

On the diagram below,+5V is fed in on pin 41 (Logic) and pin 42 (Motor).
