Here is a list of things that will not be retained by the computer after the upgrade?

1. The files most endangered by update to Windows 10 are third-party applications. While the process of update is going on, if these applications are found to be incompatible they will be removed, sometimes with notice and sometimes without it

2. Many drivers that are outdated for Windows 10 will also get eliminated. Some of them may be very important for running certain devices on your system and hence you need to reinstall them separately once the upgrade is done

There is also the more common solution of transferring important files and programs onto a storage device and then placing them back in the system once the upgrade is done. One can also keep back up of the files and applications you want.

There are somethings users intending to upgrade must remember:

1. When you upgrade from certain earlier versions of Windows, the whole hard disk doesn’t get formatted but only the drive in which the earlier OS was located. If you have any files in this drive, they are certain to vanish after you are done with your upgrade but those in other drives would remain safe.

2. How much and which of your files, software and settings you can keep when upgrading to Windows 10 depends greatly on which OS you are upgrading from. If you are upgrading your system from Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, you will be able to retain settings, personal files and many apps also. However, if you have Windows Vista or the even older XP, then you will lose all your saved files and applications as you will need to create installation media on a storage device to upgrade to Windows 10.

3. There are certain programs which cannot be retained while upgrading because they are have been dumped for Windows 10 version. These include, Windows Media Center, the card game called ‘Hearts’ and the gadgets for desktop.

4. If you are using the Media Creation Tool to install Windows 10, then just before installing, the tool will ask you to choose the files and applications you want to keep. At this stage, you can select those very programs and data that you want to preserve and go ahead with the update.

CloneApp, Zinstall and Windows 8 Apps Data Backup are examples of these types of software.
