Hello im currently thinking on upgrading my cpu. I currently have an intel 2 duo core E8400 3.00GHz. Im not sure what my motherboard is called but its a maximus formula brand. I just want to know how to tell if your motherboard is compatible. I know I dont know what kind of motherboard I have but maybe the cpu i currently have in will help? If not can someone just explain how to know if a motherboard supports a certain cpu. Thanks!

I has to do with the CPU socket, the CPU in my sig. is 1366, only certain CPU's use that socket. Beyond that is the generation, some sockets like 1155 went for 2 generations, Sandy (Core 2k models) and Ivy (Core 3K models) Bridge. Not all early 1155 socket boards support 3rd gen Core CPU's. But many did with a BIOS update.

Your CPU is likely Socket 775, which are out of production and several sockets and generations back. You can use a program CPU-z to get detailed info on your system. Look up the model and the manufacturers website should have a CPU compatibility list.
