How to know if the pump is damaged

How to know if the pump is running dry or etc . because when im filling up my water loop and i start it and i didn't notice that the water is not going to the pump for like 3 sec and now im using it its perfectly fine . i tried opening it on without water but its only for like 1 sec

Is your pump gravity fed? Also you never want to run your pump without some waterflow going through it. The water acts as a lubricator for the bearings. You'll notice some high pitched buzzing sounds and especially a rise in temperatures.
