How to lock and unlock your MacBook Pro with Apple watch or IPhone?

The Auto Unlock feature enables you to pair your Apple Watch to your Mac or your iPhone to your Mac. Once paired, you would be able to automatically unlock your computer just by sitting down in front of it without entering passwords. The following steps will show you how to enable auto lock on your Apple Watch and IPhone. But first, some prerequisites.

Prerequisites:
  • ■ Ensure your Apple Watch and Mac meet the system requirements for Auto Unlock: Newer Mac using Mac OS Sierra or later and Apple Watch using Watch OS 3 or later).
    ■ Ensure your Apple ID is using two-factor authentication instead of two-step verification.
    ■ Ensure the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi of your Mac are switched on.
    ■ Ensure your Apple Watch and MacBook Pro are signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID. To do this on your Mac, launch the Apple menu > go to system preferences > click iCloud. For Apple Watch, Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone > go to General > Apple ID.
    ■ Ensure your Apple Watch is using a passcode. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone then type Passcode.
    ■ Make sure your Mac isn't using screen sharing or Internet sharing
    ■ Ensure your Mac has “Allow your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac” selected in Security & Privacy preferences. (Launch the Apple menu > go to 'System Preferences' > click on 'Security' and 'Privacy' > Select the 'General' tab)
How to enable Auto Unlock on your Mac with Apple Watch?
Once you have met the above prerequisites, follow the steps below to enable unlock on your Mac:
1. Go to 'System Preferences' in the Apple menu bar on the desktop

2. Click on 'Security' and 'Privacy'

3. Click on the box to Allow your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac
Within few seconds, auto unlock will be activated.

How to enable Auto Unlock on your Mac with iPhone ?
There are different ways available to pair your MacBook Pro with your Apple Watch or iPhone. One of such ways is using the Mac ID app.
To get the process up and running, you need the Mac ID app for iOS and its free counterpart for your MacBook Pro and other Macs you want to unlock. The Mac ID app allows you to remotely lock your Mac (if you are within range). The following steps will show you how to pair your MacBook Pro with your IPhone using the Mac ID app.

1. Download and install Mac ID on your iPhone and MacBook Pro.
Download the Mac ID app for iOS on your iPhone (you need to pay $4) and its free counterpart for your MacBook.

2. Go to 'System preferences' > 'Security' and 'Privacy' > 'General'
At this point you need to click on the option which allow the apps to downloaded from Mac app store and other identified developers. By default, always the Mac app store is selected, which is why there is a need to change it.

3. Lock or wake your Mac up.
After this, open Mac ID app on your MacBook and click on 'Setup' (The app would start searching for your iPhone) > Select your iPhone once it pops up on the screen > Click on 'Continue' > Enter your User Password that you have already set on the Mac > Click 'Finish'. This will take you to the next page where you would see the options 'Lock', 'Wake' and 'Authorize'.

4. Authorize your Mac with your iPhone. Choose the Authorize option in the iOS version of the Mac ID app on your iPhone to authorize your MacBook by entering your password or a touch id.

Now you can lock or wake your Mac up by clicking on the appropriate option.
