How to make backup system images

I recently made several system images of my pcs with win 7. I saved them to an external drive and tried copying to another external drive. When I do, it shows either 0kb or 16kb and sits for a long time copying and wouldn't copy all the images. Also I had one image on 2 dvd discs, I tried to make an iso of it and stick it on the external drive but said the format wasn't valid or something. How do I properly make backups of these system images??

Assuming you are using windows backup and restore. Although you created the images you do not have ownership of all of the folders within the image. It is likely you have an appearance of doing nothing but it is moving the image the image files are large 20+GB. you can take ownership of the folder or open each folder and acknowledge the administrator control prompt. once you do that it will show the correct folder data size. as for making backups of the images just copy and paste I have done it many times without any problems.

Yes I figured it was moving the data. Once transferred to another backup drive it read 38 gb. I just moved the image I wanted to use back into the main folder and it loaded fine.
