How to make graphics card run on system

I have just downloaded windows on my new system and my gtx 1060 is not kicking in when I opened a game. What do I need to do?

Do I need the graphics drivers?

Make sure all windows updates are complete and make sure to update your graphics drivers using Nvidia Geforce experience. Also, is this a new build? Is your monitor plugged into the graphics card and not the motherboard graphics port?

Make sure your monitor is plugged into the graphics card and not your motherboard display outputs.

What exactly do you mean by "not kicking in"?
