Open Display Settings by clicking the Start button. Then click Control Panel, followed by clicking Appearance and Personalization.

Within there, click Personalization, and then clicking Display Settings.

Under "Resolution," use the slider to select your resolution. 1280x1024 would have to be supported by your monitor, so it may not be an option.
