How to obtain 7 Volts?

I was going through the posts a few days ago & noticed a reply where someone used a 3-position center-off switch to combine +12V & -5V to get a +7V input to their fan. This basically gave it a high & low setting. How is this done? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

No, no, no. You have to use the +5 as negative and +12 as positive, the red wires are +5 and the yellow are +12. Adn whatever you do, make sure that the +5 is NOT grounded to the chasis. Since a fan is not in contact with the chassis (it clips onto plastic usually), this should not be a problem.

I'll run you through the circuit real quick. The 'red' lead on the fan (positive) gets hooked directly into the 12V power line. The 'black' lead (negative) gets hooked into the center pole of the switch. Then you hook Ground and 5V into the other poles of the switch. Now, in the center position, the circuit is open, and the fan no worky. On mine, switch up is 12V, and switch down is 7V. You have to make sure electrons are flowing through the fan correctly, no matter how you hook it up.
