How to OC AMD FX-57? What am I doing wrong?

I built my computer x-mas of 2006, I know its old, I thought what the heck let me try OC'ing this a little since I don't use it any more and I can learn from it.

The specs are:
GIGABYTE GA-K8N-SLI
AMD Athlon 64 FX-57
2GB DDR400
2x GeForce 7600GT in SLi
600W PSU
2x Velociraptor 150GB HDD Raid 0(prob don't need to know for OC purpose)
Win XP home x86

I did some reading and watched some Youtube videos and thought I understood what to do so I could OC a little and get some practice of how to OC.

I got CPU-Z, Core Temp and Prime95, also got 3DMark to do some tests to see how much I gained.

I can't seem to install 3dmark, it tells me it is preparing install sheild then closes but doesn't open install shield, ohh well I will just load some games and test the FPS once I OC a little

CPU-Z for Clocks said my Core Speed was 2814Mhz, multiplier x14, Bus Speed 201Mhz and HT Link 1005Mhz

So I went into the Bios and raised the FSB from 200 to 215 which should have given me 3.0Ghz instead of 2.8Ghz

Now when I started my PC it was fast, usually on start-up it would hang displaying my background for like a few min then load all the shortcuts. This time it was like 10 sec it paused on the background before continuing to load.(this may have been a fluke as it started slow the next time I tried it, think a program is hanging at start-up but don't know how to find out)

Then I loaded up CPU-Z and it said Core Speed was 2702Mhz, multiplier x14, Bus Speed 193Mhz and HT Link 965Mhz

So I thought WTF shouldn't those numbers have gone up, so I went back into the BIOS and put the FSB back to 200 and thought I would just raise the multiplier since mine is unlocked.

I raised it from 14 to 15 because it would give me 3Ghz and upon restarting I got a black screen when the windows loading screen should be displaying.

I then changed the multiplier to 14.5 and It booted this time and CPU-Z said that my clock has gone up to 2.9Ghz and 14.5 for the multiplier but I want to get 3 or 3.2 Ghz maybe more.

So I reset everything back to default and thought I would post here to get some help from people who have done this before. I don't want to do some record OC I just want to OC a bit so I can get an idea of what to do/adjust to get a stable OC so down the road it will be easier.

Haven't done any tests but at stock settings/cooler the temp never goes above 40c.

Sorry for typing so much but wanted to put as much info as possible, if you need anymore info I will tell you.

*And on a side note if I have a locked CPU, could I raise the fsb to say 250 and lower all the multipliers so everything is stock settings will it boot or will I still need to raise the voltage? That way I could keep everything stock and just OC the CPU.

Hi, did you remember to turn off cool&quiet I think it is called. It spins down the CPU freq when not under stress so CPU-Z reads it as a lower value. Also I hope you have a good cooler on there as those FX got a little toasty under a high OC.

I looked in the bios but couldn't find any thing called cool and quiet, just fan temp/speed settings but no main setting for them all.

I dont think that series of cpus featured the cool n quiet feature, fung are u sure ur not talking about the current gen FX cpus? lol

Did u make sure to save what u changed in the bios when exited?

In any of those two options you will have to add voltage to the CPU for get it stable, FX-57 is very good for overclock but also runs hotter and need good cooler for avoid all that heat.

Your motherboard should have a Cool'n'Quite option, usually in the power options and remember that change multiplier only change the CPU frequency while change FSB change CPU frequency, RAM frequency, NB and HT frequency.

So if I understand right, raising the multiplier or the FSB requires me to raise the voltage, but if I raise just the CPU multiplier then I only have to raise CPU voltage not everything.

And what if I raise the FSB to 250 and lower the multipliers for the CPU, RAM, NB and HT to keep everything at stock frequencies, would I need to raise the voltage just because the FSB is raised or no because the frequency is the same?
