Hi there, I have never overclocked before and I want to try it out on my a7n8x board with a 2500xp barton. I have 2x256 geil pc3500 and a radeon 9500 pro. What are some good settings to try? I see the multipliers in the bios but I dont really know where to start with this. Thanks for any help.

best advice is to take it slowly, do lots of testing to ensure stability, and make sure too be watching your temperatures, especially after you do something intensive, ie playing a game

others can probably recomend the best temp sensor

I do Sandra Sisoftware testing. Burn in, mem benches, CPU benches. I just build a system for my parents and will be doing memtest86 and prime95 in a while. They are good tests as well.

Up the FSB as MUCH as you can, and up the CPU multiplier as MUCH as you can. Watch the temps, and up the Voltages of your mem, CPU and chipset no more than, 2.8V, 1.8V, don't know how much you can pump voltages in the chipsets.

when you overclocked too much you'll know cause it'll:
1. not boot Win
2. random reboots
3. no post
4. beeps beeps beeps
5. no screen in which case you need to clear CMOS.

The XP1700(1.43) is currently at 195x11 @ 2.25Ghz so an 820Mhz overclock ain't too shabby....LOL

I use 3d mark 2k3 as a safety. If it dont run right Ive gone too far. Start by bumping the fsb until 3d mark tells you before it starts that it wont run the benchmarks. Then drop the multiplier by 1 and keep going. Keep checking your temps and if your'e still cool, bump the voltage. Remember the more scary it gets the better. once you chicken out,run some burn ins to make sure it's good. Knock yourself out.

Thanks for the help everyone. I have my fsb at 166. So that means 166*2=332. If i go any higher it says that memory test failed and It says memory test failed and sometimes i need to clear cmos. what gives?

Good question. That ram is rated for 216 fsb. If you tried 170 and it wont go I would take it back. First though try again and make sure the ram speed comes up as the same as the fsb ,and start with 170 and where it says memory frequency make sure it says sync. Good luck ! let us know what happens.
