I am not sure if this is the right section to post this so please let me know if it is not.

I'm trying to help someone with a problem on their PC and it is basically just that they used to be able to open .tiff files by just clicking the .tiff link but now, since updates, they have to click the .tiff link and have to either navigate to the download section and open it there or click "open, save, save as" depending on which browser they use.

It would not be a big deal to me if this happened but they actually use .tiff files for their work and go through several hundred a day so I can see how this would be a big problem for their work efficiency.

I have not been able to find anything concrete online and any plugins and alternate programs have not worked so far. I tried reverting windows to its earliest backup point to no avail and I have tried all programs in the "use as default program" section available on the PC, even the ones that worked just a few days ago.

It seems like it should be a very simple fix and I hope someone knows! It is such a bother they are even considering buying a new PC so I'd like to save them the hassle.

I mentioned in my post that I already tried changing the default program to every one of the programs available on their PC.

The issue is now they have to do 1 or 2 steps more than just clicking the .tiff file instead of the one click and done method before they received mandatory system updates. Used to it would just open in windows photo viewer, not asking to be saved or anything.

Yes, the file still opens, it is just costing them time when they have to go through over a thousand .tiff files a day. Instead of taking 0.1 seconds to open it now takes several seconds as they have to click several more times to taell the computer to "save as" or open up the download manager and then open it from there. They tell me it is a big annoyance, enough for them to justify possibly buying a new PC in hopes that it won't have the same issue. I am not sure the differences between Windows 7 and the newer ones or even if there is a difference so I wouldn't want them to waste their money.

Chrome is the preferred browser but they did not have issues on the other browsers either until the new updates came in. They are not sure what was exactly updates and rolling back to a previous windows back up did not fix the issue.

They only deal in .tiff and .PDF. Unfortunetly both are effected. The system has been scanned with Microsoft Security Essentials and Malearebytes and nothing was found. Apparently thr issue is also effecting at least one other person they work with as their computer is also now doing the same thing with .tiff files.

It's very odd, it is across all browsers so I believe it is some windows 7 update that has changed these settings. They use a desktop and their friend uses a laptop if that information matters.

Tried that, the updates were still installed even though the restore point was a month back.

Is this a certain website they work on that does this? There are browser helpers that work on things to open them from the web, for example Adobe has the Adobe Reader class ID which is linked to the web browser and opens PDF files. If that plug-in breaks, then it would either not open the file or force it to download instead of opening. In many cases multiple setups of the Adobe programs cause issues, if someone has Reader installed and Pro or Standard, then another version of one of those gets installed, the web opening breaks and you need to save a file before opening it. Fix for that is to remove all Adobe Reader/Pro/Standard programs, delete the directories, sort through the Registry to clean up any left overs and install them again clean.

If they only work on a certain website to click the links to images, they may have changed the code. You can set certain tags for the links and images to not allow certain actions to be done, like opening them directly.
