How to over-ride access denied stuff for other HDD's

I salvaged an older computer and put the HDD into mine, I wanted to get some of the files off my desktop but access to the desktop or etc is denied, specifically "dont have permission to access this folder" and permanent access doesn't work, etc.

What version of Windows are you using? You have to take ownership of the folders/files on the older HDD to be able to access them.

I'm using windows 10 right now. The HDD that I'm trying to get files off the desktop from has Windows Vista (and I can't boot into it because for some reason it says I need to activate windows or whatever - and that doesn't work)
