How to overclock a amd fx 8320 to 4ghz

Hi I'm new to overclocking and I wanted to give it a try. I have a amd fx 8320 and right now it's at 3.5 ghz and I want to get to 4ghz here's my specs Mobo msi 970 gaming, evga ssc gtx 960 4gb, and 8gb of ram.

First of all make sure you have an after market cooler on the Fx 8320.
If you are using the stock cooler that came with your Amd Fx cpu it may limit how much you can overclock.
Heat is the enemy, once you start to overclock a cpu, so the name of the game is cooling for starters.

FX chips are Multiplier unlocked.

So it`s a case for a simple overclock of the cpu to just change the multiplier of the cpu.
You should be able to manually set the multiplier value if at 3.5Ghz it should be 200 x 17.5= 3.500 or 3.5Ghz

If you up the multiplier to the value of 18 then you simply x the 200 by 18 to get the core speed of your cpu.

Make half multiplier changes, save the settings in the bios and test to see if windows loads without any errors.
Then you start again.
You will reach a point where windows fails to load.
If this happens you should back the multiplier setting back to the last value where windows loaded.
You then need to do a cpu stress test to see if the cpu is stable under heavy load in windows.
And keep an eye on the cpu temperature, never let it reach any where close to 80c as it is reaching the thermal limit of the cpu and you can burn it out.

If you wish to go higher, then the cpu may require a 0.25 to 0.50 increase in power of the cpu core that can be done in the bios section of your motherboard. When you start to add more voltage to a cpu core it will heat up quicker, and temperatures of the cpu will creep up.

If a cpu is not stable set on the current multiplier value, a small bump in core voltage is often required.


The max voltage of an FX is about 1.6v do not go over this as it may result in damage to the cpu.
