My ram base clock is 2400mhz 1x8 8gb corsair vegeance i want to run it on near 2666 cuz its said that its support overclocking. My XMP In bios are on and ram is running on 2400mhz i have chaged nothing please do help me. Specs- Ryzen 1700 , 1x8 8gb ddr4, Corsair 650w, Mobo msi b350 tomhawk, gpu 750ti , 1tb Wd.

It won't damage anything. If you try to overclock to 2600 MHz and it isn't stable, your PC will either fail to post, or get blue screens in Windows. If that's the case, you can either try increasing the voltage (although I don't know if I'd recommend this if you don't know what you're doing), or revert the frequency back to what it was. If it seems stable, then you can try running a utility like Memtest to ensure that it really is stable.

You realize CAS latency (CL) is measured in clock cycles? Clock cycles for DDR is half the effective transfer rate. So 2400 MHz CL13 means CAS latency in nano seconds is 13/1200 = 10.83 ns. 3200 MHz CL15 latency is 15/1600 = 9.375 ns. So 2400 MHz CL13 has both higher latency and lower bandwidth than 3200 MHz CL15.

How did you establish that you're getting better performance with 2800MHz compared to 2400MHz? Sure, if you run some synthetic memory benchmarks they may be better, but I doubt you're getting any noticeable benefit in regular applications if you're just doing stuff like gaming and normal desktop use. If you do a lot of CPU heavy stuff like compression/decompression, video editing, etc. it may make a little more of a difference.

Answer your question by yourself what I do with my build...

i9 7900 @4.5 GHz
X299-Deluxe
64 GB RAM
2 x Vega 64
SSD 1 : Samsung 950 Pro 512 GB NVME
SSD 2 : SanDisk Ultra II 960 GB SSD
SSD 3 : SanDisk Ultra II 480 GB SSD
SSD 4 : SanDisk Ultra II 240 GB SSD

Backup Drive : Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2 TB

ASUS ThunderboltEX3

All this stuff is definitely not for „Gaming or Desktop“ stuff

YES you can overclock it
Just be careful with temperatures you must monitor the temp inside your mobo and and ram ... if you have good colling in your case its better
so dont overclock it to much
from 2400 to 2600 i think you can do it
your motherboard support overcloking ..
the only difference that have Z mobo from B is that Z supports more sata drives and multiple graphic cards and somthing little things more that doesnt matter
so i hope i helped you
best regards

Thought I would share my experience with this kit. I have a ryzen 1700 overclocked to 3.9 @ 1.325v with two 8gb modules ( CMK16GX4M2A2400C14R ) on a B350 tomahawk mobo.

It is currently running 2666mhz 14 15 15 26 41 1t @ 1.25v (SOC auto) and I can run it at 2993 @ 1.35v 15 17 17 36 53 1t (SOC 1.1 ) but doesn't offer any benefit to what I use the computer for.

I know it's an old thread but with the current bios updates (msi b350 gaming pro) I can get my Corsair Vengeance 2x8 2400mhz to 2933mhz stable.

NB Freq: 1466.3mhz
FSB:DRAM: 3:44

16 16 16 34 69

Didn't touch the voltage.

I got 2 of these sticks. 2x8gb Cas 16. Overclocked them to 2800 mhz on 1.25v. Runs smooth with no crashing.
CPU: Ryzen 5 2600
MOBO: Asrock AB350M
GPU: GTX 980 TI
