How to perform hard drive self test with msi bios?

So basically my computer cant find an OS with a reset which is weird because it has worked everytime for 2 years and now it wont.

I tried accessing the bios from tutorials asking me to spam press f2, f10 or delete to get to bios to perform a hard drive self test to check if they are damaged.

well my bios menu is different than the one in the link, I have a msi z97 gaming 5 motherboard and the bios is different and I cant find much information on how to navigate the bios to perform a harddrive self test.

can anyone please help?

Most BIOSes don't have such diagnostics built in, so it may not be there. Some HP and Dell pre-built systems have them but I haven't seen them on many other systems.

If you have another system available which can burn disks, head to this site ->http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/seatools-dos-master/ to download a tool which runs as a bootable disk (though it's Seagate branded it runs on all manufacturers).

Your phrasing here is a bit odd: "cant find an OS with a reset." What do you mean "... with a reset?" If the BIOS was reset you may need to check the boot settings (UEFI vs legacy, boot order, SATA mode)

eta: or you mean restart (re-boot)? Of course it's worthwhile to verify those settings either way.

I kept crashing and it would just be an endless loop of getting the blue screen of death so the only option I had was to reset it and wipe everything.

When I have done this in the past, it would always reset with windows 10. I did the same exact thing and this time it said it could not detect an OS.

OK. If it's possible, try making and using that cd. Otherwise, let me know and I can try to find one that works off a flash drive. Also verify your settings as noted and check the physical cables.

However, the crashing you experienced before could have been caused by a drive going bad (though there are other possible reasons).

What I did was I downloaded the media creation tool and put it on a separate usb drive and so im hoping that I can reinstall windows 10 on my PC.

I really hope I have to buy windows 10.. that would be so upsetting..

after that I will try to figure out a way to run a diagnostic on my drives and hopefully I can figure out why my pc kept crashing

You shouldn't have to purchase a new copy. Changes were made to activation in 10 to make it easier to re-install; essentially activation is now in the cloud (that is, in Windows' activation servers).'' The servers don't just verify the key given with 10 anymore but remember the hardware ID of every activated PC so that when a PC is re-set and it first connects to the internet, it automatically reactivates without asking for a key.

If you are able to get Windows running again, there's a Windows based version of Seatools also (again, runs on different makes of drive)

I just reinstalled windows 10 and right now I am at the desktop. I checked to make sure all my drivers were up to date by checking the device manager window (right clicking each thing and making sure its updated)

It seems I have to download a few updates for windows 10 as well.

I went to my HDD and SSD and went to properties>tools>check/scan and no errors were found.

I am assuming this means there is nothing wrong with my drives?

I really dont know what else I can do to figure out why my PC crashed. It crashed into an endless loop of blue screen after I reset it previously and was installing my old apps.

I read something about a minidump but I dont think it would be on my PC anymore since I wiped everything?

oh and the message I was getting with my blue screen of death was "IRQL_NOT_LES_OR_EQUAL"

Assuming you did a format of the drive, yes, those minidumps are gone. If you want to make certain everything checks ok the seagate software is free to use, though it's quite possible a badly corrupted installation of Windows caused the "OS not found" error. As to the crashing before that, I couldn't say for sure. It could have been caused by malware, assuming the hardware is healthy.
