How to play Pokemon Emerald in Multiplayer with visual boy advance?

It has been a really long time since me and my friend played Pokemon(had a gameboy advance back then). We already got visual boy advance emulator and Pokemon Emerald Rom. We want to occasionally do trading, etc. I have a desktop and he has a laptop. We both have internet connection. But he is pretty far away(~7km), so can we play using any methods(like Hamachi)? If that is not possible, he does come to my house once a few weeks with his laptop, so we play games on lan. Is that possible atleast? How do we do it?
I have already seen the method of playing with multiplayer on the same pc, like having multiple vba open at the same time and using vbalink. That is not what i am talking about.

A mod is gonna take this post down soon because it has emulators in it but to answer your question real quick you can't trade pokemon or use any multiplayer modes on any emulator.

I actually thought it was legal, since i saw a lot of threads related to console emulators here and no one said anything about illegal in those posts.
Thanks for the suggestion, btw does the game have anything like "Pay to Win" or broken moves, etc. I have tried few games like those before and they were like that

It's not illegal but it comes close its a fine line but again not illegal. At least not in the US

Like MT6Anime said it's not REALLY illegal, but it's pretty close - because if you share the content of the game without actually owning it, that's pirating. But aside from that

There are xp boosts and cosmetics, but nothing more. It functions just like the Firered ROM so far. I think they plan to expand it to other regions.
