Hi,
Yes, this is the PSU forum. Yes, this post is about a GPU upgrade. Hear me out.
So im upgrading from a 680 to a 1080ti.
I only have 2 6-pin connectors in my computer, the 1080ti needs one 6pin and one 8pin. The PSU has 850w and the rest of the system draws around 300w under full load.
Now i have 3 possibilities.
1: one 2x 6-pin to 8-pin adapter and one molex-to-6-pin
2: one 6-pin to 8-pin adapter and one 6-pin
3: one molex-to-8-pin and one 6-pin
or some different combination of those
What do i do? I cant get a different PSU, its proprietary because ive got a HP Z800.
What about a 2x molex to 8-pin?
Thanks in advance 😀

No, it doesn't. There is no way a real 850W PSU has only two 6pin plugs. My old 450W PSU had two 6+2 pin plugs. Wait a min, proprietary HP? What are we dealing with?

Ah, some old workstation. Looking up the arch found in there, this is tech from 2008, over 10yo. Your PSU probably does have 850W, or close to it, but if it's this old I'm not sure I'd risk using it still. Nothing lasts forever and if it's been used since 2010, it's already 10+yrs old. Even the best of PSUs have a 10-12yr warranty. Now is not the time to put a high draw GPU in there. Considering this is based on Core 1...

Considering this is based on Core 1 arch, and we are up to Core 10, I'd honestly sell this and get something newer. Something not so custom so you can upgrade it when the time comes. You can use the adapters as you have the power for it, but that PSU is a ticking time bomb.

Solution
Your current power supply is not designed to run your 1080Ti. Any adapter you attempt to use just adds another point of possible failure. Not something I'd recommend. See if there is a replacement PSU for your system that has the necessary power requirements. If not, then you need to start thinking of replacing proprietary parts (Case/PSU/Motherboard).

10yrs ago 8 pin plugs didn't really exist. The power is there, just not in a way that modern parts want. I don't see an issue with using an adapter to use a current plug. It's a bit like using an adapter to go from molex to SATA if you have a PSU that doesn't have SATA plugs. The bigger issue is that you are using something so ancient that it doesn't have modern plugs on it, 8 pin or sata. The last thing I'd want to do is attach a 250-300W GPU that is worth $300-500? and have the 10+yo PSU give up when trying to power that. It's not because you used the adapters per se, it's because it's old and you asked to much from it.
