i have an EXTREMELY limited power supply in my pc and upgrading is not an option due to it being a proprietary part.
i want to use a blu-ray disc drive but i dont want it to be powered by the actual pc
i would prefer a wall outlet method or usb power.
i have seen videos and products that allow the external powering of sata hard drives and i was wondering if i could use the same method with a disc drive that is powered by a sata connector. if so what adapter should i use

Solution
Any external case that could hold a DVD (Blue-Ray or whatever, the diferece is minimal) will have an external PSU to power that case, and whithin the case you will have a power conector, with some manuality work you could wire that cables to within you case to power the blu-ray but i doubt that there is any comercial part to do it, you will probably to DIY.

If you purchase the external enclosure for the DVD just check that have 30w or more PSU.

But, why dont use an external blu-ray unit direcly?, you will have less problems and the cost will be more or less the same (or even lower) than the sum of internal blue ray and external enclosure.

im sorry but i dont quite understand what you mean, is there a way i could power the sata cable of the dvd drive without the use of the pc power

would running a game from the internal or external drive show any decrease in fps/ stuttering?

So I won’t have to keep the disc in every time I want to play?

Is there a way for me to find out? I haven’t purchased the game yet since it doesn’t get released until 24 October. It’s destiny 2 by the way

It won't need it, in reality you'll be buying a steam key to download it or similar. So if this is all about getting a disk player for this purpose, you don't need to.

HOWEVER, and it's really important, is your machine powerful enough to play it? Your PSU issues make me suspect otherwise.

i do have the option of a digital download but getting a cd is immensely cheaper in my region, so what i understand from what you said is that i buy the cd and it gives me a key?
(btw dont worry bout my pc, im rocking an i5 2400 and gtx 1050ti)

I have the same thought when i read the answer, a PSU that couldn't power even a drive shout hard that the Gpu isn't a discrete one, and Destiny 2 ask for a 1060 if you want mid settings, 1070 if want max settings and even at 900p ask for a 750ti

People like u r why the pc gaming community tend to get so confused from gaming hardware. A gtx 1050ti is more than capable at running at 1080p 60fps on high to ultra settings. Don’t believe me? The YouTube videos and reputable testers online speak for themselves. [redacted]

Errr ¿more than capable?

A 1060 hover over 60-70fps, that are good values.

Of course you could play at 30+ fps like consoles do (at highest an 1050ti would be near 45), or dial down the settings... but i would not call it "more than capable"
