how to power up a gpu which has 8 pin connector with psu which has 6 pin connector?

hey, i have a antec vp 450 watts psu
it has one 6 pin connector i am gonna buy the evga gtx 950 ftw which has 8 pin connector how should i proceed and what if i use a 6 pin to 8 pin adapter will it harm the gpu, pls give me some solid advise thanks for ur help.

Just use the 6 to 8 pin adapter. The only way you can cause harm is if you have a low grade PSU. What make and model is your PSU?

Wow I looked right past that. lol

Looks like it'll work OP. the 950 recommends a minimum of 350watts and your tier 3 450w PSU is above the threshold.

the problem is that a 6 pin provides 75w of power and an 8 pin gives 150w. so a simple adapter will not give any additional power. there is a reason the card needs an 8 pin vs a 6 pin.

it may fire up this way but i guarantee there will be problems once you try to push the card at high load. it will want more power yet won't be able to get it so it will throttle back at best and shut down at worst. there are also other issues that may arise.

i'd suggest a different model of 950 or a new psu. but just ignoring the power needs and using that adapter is not really a good option no matter how you look at it.
