Hi,

I need some very basic advice please. My mom wants to set her printer
up in her bedroom, and leave her computer in the kitchen because of
space considerations. Of course, she has turned to me for help with
this. I know that she has no desire to have network cables running all
over the house so I am trying to figure out what I would need to get
for her to be able to do this wirelessly.
Here's what she has:
A Windows 2K laptop connected via wire to a cable modem. She has pc
slots available to plug in a wireless NIC. Her printer is an Hp deskjet
932c.

Is this possible to do? If so, what equipment does she need?
Thanks for the help!
Charlie

First, put a wireless router between the cable modem and the laptop. Most
wireless routers that I've seen have several wired (ethernet) ports in
addition to supporting wireless access, so you can still use a cable if the
laptop doesn't already support wireless. Or buy a wireless PCMCIA card for
the laptop.

Next, shop for a wireless print server which will live near the printer. I
saw some inexpensive one on the Dell site. I'm sure HP will sell them too,
as well as a lot of other sources. I personally shop a lot at PC Connection.
Don't get confused by wireless routers that have builtin print servers, too.

Caution: Not all Printer Servers support ALL printers. Check for
compatibility first with the maker. Best get one from HP as well. When they
do work you don't always get a return channel (eg You can print but the
printer can't tell the PC it's out of ink/paper etc)

Thanks for the advice... I'm sure once this moves forward, I'll have
more questions,
