how to rate AMD?

I want to buy an AMD cpu. I understand they are better for gaming than intel, but why do they all seem to be slower than intel?
I have an intel 1ghz right now, and was hoping to get something in the range of 2.5-30 ghz, but it seems like the AMDs are way more expensive.
I guess I just don't know how to compare the two brands, it's like one is in inches the other in millimeters.
So, can anyone recommend an AMD cpu comparable to and intel 3ghz?
Oh and I'm looking to spend $150-$200.
Any advice is appreciated.

If you want to run more water through a pipe line you can increase the pressure and increase the speed of the water. Or, you could simply add another pipe line.

Pentium decided to use processor speed as a marketing tool since most consumers know “faster is better”. AMD went the other way by adding more pipe lines. An AMD 3000 provides comparable performance to a Pentium at 3.0 GHz even though it runs at a slower speed.

nah, i think in S754 that was the case with 3000 and below or something, but after that they kinda changed it, you need to read reviews in order to get an idea of what is going on, and not just the conclusions part too, the raw data part is what you need

If you overclock, the 3200 is fine @~ $160. If not, why not go for the 3500? It's $201 @ newegg.

you are wrong....dont be stupid....the 4800+ X2 is faster then intels dual core ships sometimes. and sometimes not. Also the FX57 is faster for some appiccations...the usless ones like games and stuff....Also there are faster chips "in existence" then the 4800+ in everyway...they just happen to be very exspensive.

Dont make stupid claims to counteract another stupid claim.
Be factual, back it up, and most of all DON'T BE STUPID
