How to re-enable HDD in BIOS

I have recently purchased an Asus k501ux that shipped with a 1TB 2.5" HDD, however I wanted to speed things up and install windows and run my programs from a ssd and use the 1TB drive for internal storage.

I purchased a 250GB Samsung m.2 850 evo and installed it in the appropriate port. Using Samsung's Data Migration software I cloned the hdd but when I booted from ssd the screen continually flickered and windows start menu won't open. I've unsuccessfully attempted to run repairs and recoverys via a bootable USB I created the system backup on prior to undertaking any of these changes, and each time the process terminates prior to completion.

It was suggested to me to disable the hdd in the sata 0 port in bios, which I've done, but Windows 10 is continuing to struggle to boot via the ssd in sata port 1. Thinking that I should format the ssd and start all over, I can't seem to find an option to re-enable the 1TB hdd via bios...although bios at least recognizes the drive is there. Finally if I try and use the bootable USB to make any changes to the hdd it tells me the drive is locked.

At a minimum, I'd like to re-enable my hdd and use my laptop as it originally shipped. Ideally, I'd like to install and run windows 10 on the ssd and use the hdd for internal storage.

Any suggestions or advice would be more than welcomed. Thanks!

If I can re-enable the 1TB drive then I'll try to reclone with Macrium Reflect...problem is I can't enable that drive and swapping the drives from sata 0 to sata 1 wont work as sata 1 is a m.2 slot.

Not sure of the motherboard as I can't access device manager but the bios info is as follows:
Bios Vendor: American Megatrends
Version: 206
VBIOS Version: 1028.I019K501UX.006
EC Version: F0SL0900

Ha, ok sorry mate...I'm a bit of a noob. So when I use the command line to run a basebaord query via wmic it reads ASUSTeK Computer Inc. K501UX (version 1.0).

I appreciate your help :)

AH stupid me didn't see it at the very top in the first line XD second this is a Laptop as well. Is there any way to go back to the same page that you disabled it and undo it? Usually it is just an on off type thing and either has a box to check or you select it, press enter or another key and it has a menu to enable or disable. Don't have much time today but if i get a chance I'll look over the user guide for it later on if i get some time. Weekend is time with the kid so I don't do much Tom's Hardware on the weekends.

Yeah, I know what you mean...I rarely have time in front of a PC on weekends either!

So within the bios settings there is no option to check, select or enable. When I go to the "advanced" tab and select "sata configuration" it lists serial ata port 0 and identifies the hdd connected (the 2.5" 1TB) along with serial ata port 1 and identifies the ssd connected but the only option to change anything is the sata mode selection from raid to ahci.

When I originally disabled the drive, it was via the "boot" tab where it lists the "boot option priorities" has a "disable" option next to any bootable device. However, since doing so, the drive is no longer listed as a boot option. There is the capacity to "add new boot option" at which point you are asked to specify a name for the new boot option, then enter the path to the boot option in the format fsx:\path\filname.efi, whereby six pci options are given (not sure which one I'd select), but when one is chosen, you are then asked to "select a file to boot" which looks like a display of various winders folders on one of the hdds - not sure if this is the ssd or 1TB hdd.

I hope this provides some more insight (maybe not) but again cheers for looking into this for me.

Hi All,
Was this issue ever resolved? I just purchased a similar Asus laptop but with 258 SSD. I want to add a HDD and boot from the HDD instead of the SSD. I want to remove the SSD and replace it with a larger one in future but for now I need to be able to boot from the HDD. How can I setup BIOS. I have the same issue as 1perspecive-- don't understand all the Boot Options and how to add a HDD here.
Thanks All.

Nah, it ended up sorting itself out as I removed the SSD and was using only the HDD temporarily and it failed. Once Asus swapped it out with a new HDD I was able to run it in conjunction with the SSD, format it and now it is used solely as a dumping ground for data as the SSD is obviously far quicker for running the OS, programs, etc.
