How To Re-Route Power/Reset Button?

So just wondering how easy it would be to move the power button from the front-bottom to the top of a case like the HEC Compucase 6C28BBX585. Is it as simple as just drilling a hole?

I'd really love to drill a fan hole straight through the front of the case to improve the overall look of the case, but in order to do that I'd either have to move the power button or develop a wireless-type button to turn the PC on, and I'm hoping that moving it will be a much simpler option.

So...any ideas of how I can move it? Thanks guys

Daniel, It is most likely that easy. Go easy when removing the switch from its previous mount, most often I have seen these either screwed in, or hot-glued. In the case of hot-glue, you do not want to rip the cable out from the back of the switch.

Best of luck.

drill a hole on the side of the case, and install a power button there

You simply need to remount the buttons to a different location, be aware of cable length, keep in mind that you will be leaving a hole where the button came from as well.

Perhaps remove the button/switch from the existing location, note the size/shape of the mounting hole and try to replicate that where ever you wish to mount the new button location.

The button itself simply needs a "short" in order to trigger the power cycle. You could in theory do this with a lightswitch if you really wanted to, just trigger the light "on" quick then turn it back off.

If you wanted to be creative you could even invest into a 'airplane bomber style switch' with the safety cover which would look pretty sweet in my humble opinion. Or you could even "hotwire" the computer on with some raw cable connections and short them when you want to trigger the "on/off" function. The possibilities are endless, and there are many types of aftermarket on/off switches available as well for your PC if you choose to do so.

I'm in the process of mounting one of those in my old truck, to control some new electronics bits.

This would not be ideal for a PC on switch, but you could make it work.

A Master Arm for your Mavericks? That'll take care of them Sunday drivers...

So I could just take the front panel off (it just snaps on and off...easy), take the power switch out of it, measure the hole using a micrometer and then drill a new hole nearby as long as the cable reaches, which would probably be on the side at the front, and then just put the switch back in the newly drilled hole?
It sounds too easy to be true, is it really that easy?

Depending on exactly how the original switch is mounted, yes, it might be that easy.

Your power switch is a simple MSPST or Momentary Single Pole Single Throw switch. All it does it temporarily connect the two wire leads together, completing a circuit, to power on the computer and when you release it, the circuit opens up again. You can turn your computer one with a screw driver or paper clip just by bridging the two pins where the power switch connects to. The reset switch works the same way.
The only way this WOULD NOT work is if your power switch is part of a circuit board integrating LEDs and USB ports into one wire harness. If that's the case you would have to cut the wire leads off and reattach them to a new MSPST switch and then you can mount THAT wherever you want.
