How to re-use drives from WD my book

Hello,
I took the drives out of my WD My Book. there are 2 - 500 mb drives. I'm trying to use them as spare drives, but I cannot format them with win xp. i tried DBAN, but it errors out. Any help?

Welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums!

Install them in the computer. Go to Control Panel ---> Administrative Tools ---> Computer Management ---> Disk Drives. Select the drives one at a time and NTFS format them.

Hello, It's me - SteveDaFramer.
I put them in an external sata dock. Brought up disc manager. i had to re-partition the drives, then re-format. It was the re-partitioning that was the key for me. Each of the drives made up half of a 1TB backup drive. Once separated, they needed the repartition and format. Viola!
