How To Read Data On Directv Hard Drive?

I took apart the directv dvr hr-34-700 and i plugged the hard drive into my computer and it installed the drivers right away (btw i'm using a sata to usb) and i went to disk management and saw all the partitions of the drive but was unable to do anything with it,i would like to see whats inside the drive,thanks :)

Unless Directv publishes some decryption thing (Like Tivo did), unlikely.


Generally, you can't. They have their own encryption scheme.

Basically you can't. You can't even transfer the HDD from one DirecTV DVR to another (if the original broke and you got it replaced with an identical model under warranty). The encryption is tied to some unique number stored in the DVR's hardware. There's a reason lots of people put together their own media center/DVR.

If you just want to see the data on it, they usually use a Linux filesystem like ext3 but with the partition type set to a different value so regular OSes and partition management software won't recognize it. Try changing the partition type ID to values for common partitions and see if you can mount it.
