I've got an issue with a tower running XP and cannot launch exporer.exe. The system recently had the, what I like to call, FBI virus. The virus was removed and now this issue has come about. I've tried rechanging the shell to explorer.exe as well as the userinit.exe. The issue has still not resolved. Also, I'm getting this error code: entry point_except_handler4_common could not be located in the msvcrt.dll library, and this is titled: explorer.exe - Entry point not found

Solution
You got to really be careful when it comes to grabbing .dll files and .dll fixes/patches off the internet. I would recommend the system file over-write using the install disk before I would recommend trying to fix .dll files using files from websites claiming to fix everything. Plus if you've ever played that game before, you should know that fixing one leads to another and so on.....

Just reboot with the install disc and choose to install a fresh copy of Windows right on top of the existing copy of Windows. Don't add/change or delete any partitions. Don't do any formatting. This will overwrite the Windows/System32 directory for you along with the link libraries for explorer.exe.
The nuclear option would be to just re-install Windows XP, without a format or partition change(Do Not reformat or change the partition structure at all). Just re-install the OS right on top of your system drive. No data will be lost but all your system files will be re-written/overwritten.

There has been one other person and myself trying to work on this computer so that kind of possess a problem with know exactly what was done. I believe the other guy has tried running a repair with the disc. I downloaded the msvcrt.dll fixer onto a thumb drive but as far as getting the file off and installed with no explorer is a little difficult and beyond my knowledge. I'm thinking an in-place upgrade would probably be the best route but I'd like to know how to fix this issue without taking the easy way out.
