Apologies for the beginner question, I just want to make sure I get this right.
I'll be upgrading from my 780 to a 980 ti in a few days and had a couple of questions about the process. I've seen some videos where they simply go into the device manger, go into display adapters, right click their current graphics card and uninstall it, whereas others go about it using the uninstall programs menu and manually removing each bit of nvidia software one at a time. I already know how to physically change the graphics cards over, but if someone could give me a step by step guide on the software side of things that would be great

Solution

Most likely yes, but the same would happen if you manually removed the 780 Ti drivers anyway. Anytime you change video cards/drivers you can expect that to...

So when the new card arrives all I have to do it switch it out with the 780, boot back up, insert the CD and do a clean install from there? Will that delete all the old files and install the new ones ready for the 980 ti?
I've heard that it's best to manually remove everything before installing a new graphics card though.

Manually works fine, but with the new Nvidia Experience software...they have the option to simply click the 'Fresh Install" option and it will remove all old/previous drivers/software for you.

So yes; switch out the 780 for the new 980, boot back up, insert CD, and select 'Fresh Install' during the install process. Easiest way to do it.

Thanks, just one more question. When I boot back up after switching out the graphics cards will I be running at a low resolution and using the windows VGA drivers as the new card wont have drivers, or should I expect full resolution.

Most likely yes, but the same would happen if you manually removed the 780 Ti drivers anyway. Anytime you change video cards/drivers you can expect that to happen. Once the new drivers are installed with the 'Fresh Install' everything will be back to normal and fully functional.
