I'm cleaning up my context menu, and I have two entries below that I'd like removed from the right-click context menu of any of my media files. They are:
  • Edit with Photos
  • Create a Video
I have tried looking these up online, but the locations do not seem to be the same on Windows 11 as they were in Windows 10 (the entries do not appear the same in the registry). And any tutorials do not seem to cover the current setups for Windows 11.

Where can I find these and remove them from the context menu? I've tried using Winaero (which has them listed as options to remove), but it doesn't seem to work for some reason).

Registry editing is a last resort.

Unless there are specific driving reasons for removing the Context Menu entries just ignore them and leave the entries alone.

= = = =

That said what will probably be needed is to search the Registry for "Edit with Photos", "Create a Video", etc. via entering "regedit" in the search box.

The search will find the entries ( could be multiple entries) and then allow changes to be made.

And the search will find the entries where ever they may be with respect to Windows 10 or 11. My search (Windows 11) found "EditWithPhotos".

Depends on being Name or Data.....

All and all very risky and should only be done after a full system backup including the registry itself.

Likewise for third party tools and apps intended for registry changes.

At the most, search for where the entries are by using a user account that is prevented from editing the registry.

Find the applicable locations and take some screenshots for reference. Research accordingly to ensure that the location(s) and registry editing actions presented will fully and properly remove the entries from the context menus.

Then, if removal is truly required, back everything up and edit the registry. Try just one change and wait a few days/boot ups to determine if all is well.

Some app or update may reinstate the entry. Or crash because the entry could not be found.

My recommendation: ignore the entries.

Solution:

Thanks for the info all. This is only going to be an issue for folks (like me) who install the old version of Photos Legacy on Windows 11 (I don't believe these appear otherwise). Here is how I fixed it.

You can search "Create a new video" or "Edit with Photos" in the registry, and it will give you these locations and registry keys:
  • Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Local Settings\MrtCache\C:%5CProgram Files%5CWindowsApps%5CMicrosoft.PhotosLegacy_2024.11070.10002.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe%5Cmicrosoft.system.package.metadata%5CS-1-5-21-3781113242-3559829491-3761455485-1001-MergedResources-0.pri\1daf716cc2fc622\fae8ab0e
  • @{Microsoft.PhotosLegacy_2024.11070.10002.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe?ms-resource://Microsoft.PhotosLegacy/Resources/CreateVideoWithPhotos}
  • @{Microsoft.PhotosLegacy_2024.11070.10002.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe?ms-resource://Microsoft.PhotosLegacy/Resources/EditWithPhotos}
However, manually editing them doesn't work (removing the labels leaves the misc key in the context menu with no title) and they just regenerate if deleted.

I wasn't able to find them in ShellExView, but ShellMenuView did find both of them. It finds the actual strings at these locations:
  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AppXgc41cpjz8gfdmjvg8h8vcnemkbfknn6w\shell\ShellCreateVideo\Command
  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AppXgc41cpjz8gfdmjvg8h8vcnemkbfknn6w\shell\ShellEdit\Command
Two easy clicks and they were gone!
