How to remove write protection of a folder on an external drive?

Right click the folder, select properties, and go to the security tab (I think simple sharing may need turned off for this). Change the "allow" fields as necessary.

Another option, on win-7 files and folders, is on the Properties dialog box, that Hawkeye mentioned, down at the bottom there is a checkbox for Read Only and Hidden. If those are present, and there is a checkmark in the Read Only, click it to remove it. Might work.
