How to repair hard disk cyclic redundancy error

first i open my external hard disk in d: partition and when i open it it prompts that i should have to format it and when i go to command prompt and type "d:" their is a reply which is (cyclic redundancy error) what should i do ?do i have to format it ??

Try to format it first, if you can. If not, then its time to replace it.

CRC (cyclic redundancy check) error is usually encountered when trying to read data from a damaged disk.
