how to reset my password gateway dx4860 desktop. unable to start windows due to forgot password

my gateway dx4860 was given to me and I am unable to start computer because it asks for a password as soon as I turn it on. So I never even get to windows start up. I have a black screen which has a box that says enter password. I don't know the password so can someone help me out on this.
I have restored the system to factory settings but when it reboots, it goes back to the black screen again and asks for a password.

sorry to dig up an old thread, but I have a related question.

I just bought the wife a used laptop, and it's locked. I'm not going to ask anyone to divulge 'the great secret', because 10 seconds of googling is all it took.

my question is:
when someone asks this question, can we not link them to the microsoft support webpage which has instructions to legitimately reset a user password?
