Hi everyone. I have noticed this issue and are looking for your opinion on this one and would be grateful if anyone can please help.

Our Setup is that we have an ADSL issued by the ISP that is connected to the router and the from there they are distributed on a switch.

The issue is if the internet is done, the whole network goes down and everybody on the network gets an IP of 169.254.X.X instead of our internal IP.

We do have a DC which also hands out DHCP.

Anybody knows where the issue might lies.

Thank you.

Solution
Well the problem is kinda obvious. 169 signifies DHCP NO LONGER AVAILABLE.

DC "also" hands out DHCP? I hope you mean you have a box capable of being the DHCP server but is not currently active but "can" be use. If that's the case, please do, because apparently the current DHCP server is attached, somehow goes down with the DSL

So you want a single DHCP server, stand-alone, having nothing to do with the Internet to perform this function. The good news is, it can be ANY box on the subnet.

Hi jsmithepa, thank you for the answer. The system is one that I have inherit it wasn't setup by me. So if I understand you clearly, if I hand out DHCP from the router instead of the DC this should sort out the issue?

Thank you

Oh so your DC currently has that task, and it goes down when the Internet dies... fascinating. Well I dunno, this is more of a Microsoft Certified Engineer thing which I am not, but yeah, am pretty darned sure a simple router doing this job should be blind to whether Internet is up or not.

Alright thank you for the input though. I will try to seek help from someone with some more thorough knowledge about this.
