How to restore audio sound on a dell computer free

My audio was working fine,tried to run a dvd no audio. Thought the problem was the driver dnld realtek audio 97. I had Legacy already on board. I'm running a Dell Latitude D600 and didn't keep enough space alloted to do a system restore. Now not even music cds will play

Make sure speakers are not muted.
Make sure Windows Audio Service is set to Automatic & Started.
(Run services.msc)

Download & save to your desktop, Audio drivers for your computer model and Operating System from your Computer MFG Site. (Do not Install yet)
Uninstall Audio Drivers iin Device manager & Reboot.

When new hardware is detected, point to desktop for drivers.

1) - No errors in device manager ?
NO "other devices" with yellow ? or ! point.

2) - When I had problem with my Dell Audio, I downloaded Soundmax Integrated Digital from dell and cured my Audio.

3) - Search by Vendor and Device Code.
If you go in device manager, Expand Network Adapters, (or whichever device you need driver for)
Right click properties, go in details for the device driver.
You will see a code like per example VEN_8086&DEV_27D8&SUBSYS...

The VEN code means vendor and the DEV code means device: in this case the vendor is 8086 and the device is 27D8.

Once you have the two codes, go to www.pcidatabase.com.
Enter the two codes and you should get the name of your hardware. From there you can search for a driver download for your hardware.

I had used Belarc adviser to point me in the right direction and I downloaded a driver that wasn't compatable with this ancient little work horse but on my third driver download attempt and reboot I found the combination that I needed. Thx again for all your help and details.
