How to restore dell inspiron 1564 laptop to factory settings

Do I need the windows product key even though the laptop was preinstalled? Basically the product key has a few numbers and letters missing from the back of the laptop and there seem to no way to retrieve it.
Can anyone help?

A factory reset should include the key. Do you have the instructions for doing it? Was there a recovery disk, or do you have to boot into a Dell-specific recovery mode?

Please keep in mind that a factory reset is very different from doing a fresh install of the OS.

As said...most Dell recovery disc do NOT need activating on your own machine...
