how to run two displays

i want to open two programs @ the same time and work on both of them... but i do not know how to get the monitor no.1 to display differently than monitor no.2

Right click the desktop, click "screen resolution". Set up one of the monitors as an "extended desktop". You may also want to move the pictures of the monitors to the proper orientation, so when you drag windows from one monitor to the other, it flows correctly.

What version of windows are you running?
You should enable extended display in display settings.
