Is it possible to connect a laptop with a single cable to two external displays and show the desktop on one and an extended on the other? The laptop would have to recognize the two display. I'm sure a device needs to be in-between the laptop and displays.

Solution
One of Displayports unique features is the ability to split the cable or daisy chain (the monitor would have a 2nd displayport port to connect it to another monitor) them to multiple displays.

HDMI,DVI, VGA can't do that.

Not unless you have a DisplayPort output.

Using a DP cable is fine, but one cable cannot connect twice. What would you put in-between?

I understand the use of the DP cable, but it can't connect to two displays at the same time, splitting it would give the same image on both displays. There's got to be something in-between the laptop and displays.

Hi - found this too. But there seems to be a bit more than just the MST Hub. The displays need to have the capability of setting the DisplayPort output to 1.2A in the menu. Does this sound right?
