So you just got to sanctuary for the first time, took a look around and thought... what a dump. The place looks like someone dropped a bomb on it or something when you first get to it. Oh, wait, they did. Might explain it. Well, all that mess is useful though, so be thankful! You just need to clean up and a lot of that mess can be put to work in building up your first settlement. How do you clean it up though you ask? Read on and find out!
Step 1)Claim the settlement. Find the workbench and access it to claim the settlement as your own, this will give you the option to enter the build mode to start building things up. It can also be used to scrap just about any of the junk you find lying around in the settlement down to it's base components, and will store those components within the settlement's workbench inventory, so it won't be weighing you down at all. Bonus!
Step 2) Start scrapping! Once you are in the build menu for your settlement you can wander around and when you look at things in the world it will highlight it, then just push whatever button is bound to the scrap function (it will show on the screen) and it will disappear, ready for use to build whatever your heart desires in this settlement. It's that easy!
Step 3) Scrap junk items from your inventory. Have you been collecting all the junk you can in your travels though? Maybe you are storing them in your workbench inventory as well, but that does make it look pretty cluttered when you try to access it to find anything specific. Well, you can scrap all of those items as well! Just remove them from the workbench, drop them on the ground, enter the build menu, and scrap them just like you did with the other debris lying around. This can be done for non modable weapons and armor as well
Step 4) Scrap modable weapons and armor. Any weapons or armor that can be modded must be broken down at the armor or weapons workbenches, respectively. This can be done by highlighting the item while using the appropriate workbench, and selecting the scrap option.
Now that you know how to break down everything, you should be able to collect as much as you want to build that settlement as awesome as you can! Enjoy!
