I just built a new PC and want to sell it. What are some good practices to follow? I know not to accept checks or money orders, but what about PayPal? Plus, if I only deal in cash (which I would normally prefer), how do I deal with having that much cash on myself or the other person. Worried about getting robbed, or scammed with PayPal. Don't want buyer to come to my house, but I built a tower. How, do I demonstrate that it works without bringing in a monitor and all the trimmings? Plus, do I need to install an app like 3D mark to prove it works? I already bench-marked it, screenshot the results, then removed them.

Hi @macdiva,

If you don't mind me asking, how expensive is the tower?

You're spot on about not accepting checks/money orders/CC payments.

Keep in mind that 99.9% of the people that may want to buy your tower will want to see it running. Even if you take videos of it running or have SS of benchmarks, rarely will someone be willing to fork over $$ without testing it themselves.

If you talk to the buyer and get a good vibe from him/her, ALWAYS have a friend with you IF you decide to have him come to your place and ALWAYS only during the day. NEVER take it to the buyers place. Run an extension cord out of your garage with the door closed so the buyer can see it running.

Do you have a portable generator? If so, you can meet in a public place, like a parking lot of a local store for example.

Depending on where you live, but here in the US, we have "SafeTradeStations" at local police stations. You may have something similar where you live.

Hi. Thanks for responding. I would like to get $750 for it. I do not have a garage, as you suggested. Although, for others sounds like a good idea. I have a very small house, but do have an equally small, screened front porch. Not sure I even want buyers to come to my house, although it would be easier than packing up the monitor, etc every time. I can call the local police departments to see if they have the safe space thing available. What about the money though? Cash or PayPal???? And, should I install some kind of benchmarking app?? CPUID, GPUID?? HWMonitor?? Prime95?

What are the specs for this $750? Full parts list, with make/model of everything.
Does it include a known valid Windows OS license?

Unless selling it locally, selling a whole PC can be problematic.

Your problem with not wanting anyone to come by your home makes it quite difficult. Is that common in the US?

I would just try to sell it online first. See if there are any potential buyers who don't demand a physical inspection and will accept you to ship the whole thing. Offer a facetime talk with you demonstrating the parts etc.

It kind a depends on the price if you succeed with this. If the price is right, I'm sure you can get it sold but you have to be prepared to cut in the price if you want to sell it, in the most insecure way for the buyer.

The safespace thing sounds like your best bet if you are not willing to sell the components individually.
