I just received this device from a friend and I know nothing about it: size, partitions, etc. My network can see folders on it, but I want to convert it to ext4 fs and use it as a storage device.

You can move the data and it will write it for the new partition type.

You will either have to shrink the NTFS partition if you have room, or move the files ot the other drive

Yes, but I can only do that after I set permissions and take control of the external networked drive. I can "see" the networked drive. GParted does not see it. How do I create root or admin privileges for an external network drive?
