i bought a refurbished Dell on Ebay which runs Windows 7 and my old computer runs XP. I'm trying to transfer my info over. I have plugged the new computer into power source and run an ethernet line from the new one to the router. I want to use the Windows Easy Transfer to get my files over, it's all downloaded and done from the XP side, but I can't find my new computer to run it on that one. What do I do to see that on my screen while the old one is still hooked up via ethernet as well?

Hi thanks! I can't seem to figure out how to access the new computer, it's plugged in to power and router but do I have to somehow set up a network or do I need a switch?

If both are plugged into the same router, that is a switch. You probably have to turn on Print and File Sharing on one or both to see the other.

I feel like I have to set up a network connection between the two first. There is no evidence of the new computer. Shouldnt it show up under Computer or..somewhere? I feel terribly feeble not being able to figure this out!

1. are you already sharing folders on windows xp? both computers are connected to the same router right...? if so... read step 2.

2. on windows xp, go to start, run, type \\NAME_OF_XP_MACHINE then hit start. (change NAME_OF_XP_MACHINE of course)
by doing this you will access the windows xp shared folders on the windows xp machine, you are not touching win 7 yet.
you just want to make sure you are sharing folders.... do not go to step 3 if you don't see the folders you want to share with windows 7

3. on Windows 7 do the same thing.... \\NAME_OF_XP_MACHINE (change Name_of_xp_machine of course)

let me know how this goes... you can read this tutorial too if you want. --> http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-7/share-files-and-printers-between-windows-7-and-xp/
