How to set up laptop to 42inch tv

Please help. I set up my acer laptop to my phillips 42inch lcd tv. Somehow my resolution got stuck on both screens on lowest. As a result all my windows were too large and I couldnt change it back as I couldn't see the apply buttons. I had to do a restore to get it back. What did I do wrong.

because you try to put max resolution on tv,set the output to tv of max resolution that laptop screen could handle
